It was around 3, and we were on our way to meet Nick at the mall. We were stopped at a light, when Joe looks past me into a parking lot. I follow his gaze and see this bird flopping around in cirlces on the ground. It looks like his wing is injured.
I mention something about how I saved a baby bird once and with that we pull into the parking lot. I go over to the bird and try to see if it is going to try to bite me or anything while Joe goes to get some gloves from his car.
While this is happening, this random man walks up to us and says, "What do you do in a situation like this? I just saw this bird a little while ago." We are both like, "Dammit, why is this guy talking to us?"
Joe tells him that we'll try to take it to a vet. He gives me the gloves and I pick up the bird. He is huge with red, crazy looking eyes. I finally get in the car with him and have him sitting in my lap. He keeps turning his head around (almost like an owl) and trying to stretch out his wings. That's when we decide to put him in the trunk.
I call my mom and she tells me about this vet who will take birds, so we start heading towards Broken Arrow.
It is at about this moment that I start to find our situation quite funny. Here Joe and I are driving down the road during our winter break, listening to Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" in complete silence with an injured bird in the trunk. I think that pretty much sums up our friendship.
Anyway, we get him to the vet and they take him. I ask if she thinks he will be okay and she shrugs saying, "I don't know. It looks like he has some neurological damage. His eyes were messed up." Well, at least he's better off than in some parking lot.
And as for the rest of the day...
We ended up meeting Nick at the mall, walked around some. Then Nick and I went and got a car wash. It was one of those really long car washes... pretty cool. And then I went over to my dad's house. When I was leaving I got pulled over by a cop for rolling a stop sign, but I didn't get a ticket. It was probably my good karma for saving the brain damaged bird earlier.
And I am really sad that Jerry Orbach died. Lennie was the best! No more wisecracks. :(
